ON Protein Whey Nutrition Information

Ok, so in a serving size of 32g you get 2.3g of fat, 3.4g of carbs (of which 3.1 are sugars) and 22g of protein. That’s 126 calories in total. Protein content is almost 69%, which is at the borderline of what’s acceptable for a lean powder. Yes, the amount of fats and carbs is low, but when you do the math you will see that you get 4.3g of fillers and flavouring, which I think is a bit too much.
In comparison, Gold Standard has a serving size of 31g in which you get 1.5g of fat, 3g of carbs (of which sugars 2g) and 24g of protein. Calories are 120 and protein content is 77%. So the major difference seems to be only the protein content, as the amount of carbs, fats and total calories is almost the same.

ON Protein Whey Ingredients Profile
Protein Whey is comprised of two types of protein, in order of predominance they are whey protein concentrate and whey protein isolate. Both are quality proteins that digest quickly by the body. The exact amount is not disclosed, so I guess you are getting mainly concentrate with much smaller amounts of the finer isolate.

On the other hand, Gold Standard is comprised of 3 types of protein and in order of predominance they are whey isolate, whey concentrate and whey peptides. This means that you are getting a leaner and higher quality product due to the larger amount of isolates and the inclusion of whey peptides.

ON Protein Whey Taste and Mixability

Ok, so I will throw one serving size in the blender bottle and I will shake it up so that you see how well Protein Whey mixes. As you can see, it forms a rather thick shake, which is unlikely for most of the powders by Optimum Nutrition. Gold Standard is a much lighter shake, so if you’ve found it too watery for your linking, you might enjoy Protein Whey better.

It also mixes perfectly well, so you shouldn’t have any issues using a blender bottle.

The flavour that I am reviewing is Chocolate Milkshake and the funny thing is how identical this tastes to BSN Whey DNA. I personally found almost no difference between the two tubs. For those of you who don’t know, BSN and Optimum Nutrition are owned by the same company – Glanbia PLC, but they are run independently. However, it almost seems that the powder inside the tub is the same.

Anyway, the flavour is good. I wouldn’t say that it is something that I would definitely be looking forward to, but Optimum have never had spectacular products in regards to taste, so it’s not a huge surprise.

ON Protein Whey The Bottom Point

So let’s draw line and see whether the product is worth buying. The first thing we need to consider is the price. It’s about 30% cheaper than Gold Standard and that’s largely due to the fact that it is not 2.2kg, but 1.7kg. However, even with the weight difference of 500g, Protein Whey is still cheaper per kilogram.

The way I see Protein Whey is that Optimum Nutrition created a budget version of their best-selling product, which by being smaller and cheaper will target a different audience. For example, a lot of females want smaller tubs as they are more convenient and last them for a fair amount of time. Recreational athletes who are on a tight budget, but want to have access to quality protein powder may also opt for Protein Whey.

Although I prefer Gold Standard due to the size of the tub and the ingredients profile, the differences are not massive between the two types. Protein Whey is just a budget version. It’s very much like when Apple released iPhone 5c, they are just targeting a different audience. But that’s my opinion guys.
