Trigger fingerWhat is it?

Trigger finger is a painful condition that happens when a finger locks as it is bent. The most painful part is when you try to unlock or straighten it.

Causes about Trigger Finger

A trigger finger can be caused by:

  • 1- Over use of a finger
  • 2- Over force on the finger
  • 3- Arthritis
  • 4- Gout
  • 5- Diabetes

It happens when the tendon (rubber-like bands of tissues that connect muscles and bones) in the finger is swollen. When a trigger happens, the swollen tendon has difficulty to pass through the tunnel that is located in the palm of the hand. For that reason the finger snaps and locks; sometimes even like a spring.

Keep in mind that over use of your finger can increase the risk of having a trigger. Also, some people who already have a health issue may be at risk of having a trigger finger.

How to treat and how to prevent?

They are different method to treat a trigger finger, depending on its gravity.

  • 1- There are some massages that can be performed to the area. These can help reduce the swelling of the tendon.
  • 2- There is a treatment by injecting some cortisone around the swollen tendon area. This can reduce the swollen and help the tendon to flow through the tunnel with ease.
  • 3- You can also perform some exercises that can help the condition.
  • 4- You can purchase a finger extension splint adapter at your nearest drugstore. That will help to keep your finger straighten.
  • 5- Another treatment is to perform a surgery. Usually, a surgery is performed to the local area, lasting, as I’ve been told, only 5 minutes, then leaving your hand in a bandage for approximately two weeks. However, surgery is not the only road to take 🙂

The trigger finger, I am experiencing, started when I felt pain in my palm, close to the middle finger. I could barely stand to let my palm touch the wheel when I was driving. It was very painful and I was concerned to what it could be; it felt as if I had a knife sticking into my palm. I could barely touch it, but I was determined to not let it control me; I had to get over the pain and control it 🙂

Then I started massaging my palm very gently, each day, until I was able to touch it a little more. Finally, the pain went away. I cannot remember how long it took.

As the pain went away, my middle finger started acting weird; it would lock, and when I tried opening it, it would hurt, so I kept massaging it and doing different exercises to help reduce the swollen tendon.

Overall, it is not too bad. Nonetheless, I still did see a doctor concerning this issue. I am not sure whether I will get a surgery or not; I will see how it goes.

Hope all will be well 🙂
